Genealogy – Free

From AccessGenealogy.com:

The USGenWeb Project – Proudly serving free genealogy resources for over 25 years. This site is great because it breaks it’s records out by state and county.

Resources for Genealogists from the U.S. National Archives – Has sections for starting your family research; popular topics; events; and tools for genealogists.

Genealogy – Paid

  • Ancestry – Pretty much the gold standard, but BEWARE of other people’s “research”. Always check sources from other trees BEFORE adding them to your family tree. For every trained researcher, there are about a million untrained ones!

  • Facebook – You need to ask to be a part of this group. As of 2022 it seems like the group is fairly active.

And finally, a warning!!

I would NOT recommend using Family Search as a main source, even through it is “free” and tempting. This site is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is used by members to track their families for church purposes. It is based off of member’s research and has the same warning I listed for Ancestry.com above, with the additional note that it is beneficial for members to find family connections – so it’s even more likely to have historical trees that are not accurate. I have found entire trees on Family Search that were based off of a mistake someone made in the 1960’s from viewing microfiche. That being stated, it can still be a good place to start looking.
