So, about five years ago my tree became so large that I basically broke Family Tree Maker. I worked with them over the years but the end result was that my tree would no longer update and I lost the ability to update my charts that I was using in my book. Therefore, this is index is woefully out of date.

Because of this I have created a page which goes through the descendants of John E. Partain (1780-1845) as I have researched them which are included in my private Ancestry.com tree. Everything in my research is always based on records – I do not copy other people’s family trees and add them.

Please show me the same respect and use what I have here to enhance your research.

Also note that there will obviously be errors in this information. If you find them, let me know and we can work together to fix them!

** Update! Back in 1997 when I started my research DNA for genealogy was not a thing and I did my research by hanging out in the Family History Library. Now it appears that DNA has found that some of the folks in the first generation I have for John E Partain are not actually related, so at some point I will need to go in and break those families out. Please be nice while I make these changes! I am the only one who works on this site and it is not some AI tool making these pages! It is me. And A LOT of lines of code. **

Descendants of known patriarchs

Coming soon! Henry PARTAIN (Abt. 1740-1824)

Henry PARTAIN lived in Union county, South Carolina and died in Lawrence county, Alabama. He had at least four sons, Philemon, Absalom, James, Benjamin and Hubbard. It is possible that he may have been the father of my James S PARTAIN. The weird thing about this one is that I do not see any Henrys in the early census for Alabama or South Carolina.

Coming soon! Charles PARTIN (1770-1850) and Sarah Sallie GILMORE (1776-1825) family line

Charles PARTIN was born about 1770, about 20 miles west of Dublin, Ireland. He married Sarah “Sallie” GILMORE about 1795 in Tattnall County, Georgia. She was also born in Ireland. They had at least six children before Sarah passed away. Charles then married Sarah Mary THOMAS, and they had one son.

Coming Soon! Thomas PARTAIN (1799-1869) and Catherine (1789-aft. 1881) family line

Thomas PARTAIN was born in 1799 in Virginia. He had three sons and two daughters with Catherine HOWELL between 1824 and 1844. He died in October 1869 in Pickens, Georgia, at the age of 70. I have not been able to find any evidence that Catherine’s maiden name was actually Howell, so I have removed that from my accounts. I am still working on this line.

Coming soon! Leonard PARTAIN (1812-after 1860) and Mary A KINDRICK (1815-1870) family line

Leonard PARTAIN was born in abt 1812 in North Carolina and died in Aft. 1860 in Walker County, Georgia.

Coming soon! Philemon PARTAIN (1820-1868) and Mahala TAYLOR (1824-1905) family line.

This line starts out in South Carolina and moves into Alabama. They married on July 27th, 1843 in Jefferson County, Alabama. Based on census records, they had 12 children. Some people list that his middle name was Wesley, but there are no records which support this. Their second son was John Wesley PARTAIN, and his middle name has been verified through his Confederate Soldier Pension records. Unless DNA finds something interesting, Philemon’s parents are unknown. He did list that he was born in South Carolina on the both the 1850 and 1860 Census records. My educated guess is that he was the son of Hiram Benjamin PARTAIN (about 1799-1880).

Coming soon! George Alexander PARTAIN (1832-1862) and Sarah Amanda GROSSE (1832-1891) family line

For many years I thought that George Alexander PARTAIN was the son of James S PARTAIN and Isabel EDMONDSON, but recent DNA shows that this may not be the case. I am still not convinced of this though because Isabel’s father was also named George Alexander. And Isabel was mentioned in my G-G-Grandpa’s Bible. Because of this I am moving him to his own line for now. He was born on 22 Jan 1832 in North Carolina and died on 18 Jan 1862 in Catoosa, Georgia, USA.
